  • What is the VIN Verification?
A VIN verification involves a thorough examination of your car, truck, or trailer. The inspection records essential details like the VIN number, odometer reading, body type, model year, make, model, and emissions label on an official form. This crucial procedure ensures the vehicle's distinct identification, safeguarding against fraud and theft, and is a mandatory step in the vehicle registration process in California.
  • Why do I need a VIN Verification?
Various circumstances necessitate a VIN verification, including: Registering an out-of-state vehicle or trailer. Modifying your vehicle or trailer's configuration, such as converting a bus into a motorhome. Changing the fuel type. DMV request for VIN verification to confirm vehicle or trailer possession after a recent lien sale. Re-registering a salvage or junked vehicle.
  • How much does a VIN Verification cost?
VIN verification cost $80, as well as an additional charge for travel. The travel fee may fluctuate depending on factors such as distance, time, location, or the specific pricing policies of the chosen service provider.
  • What are the differences between the DMV, CHP or private VIN Verifiers?
The primary distinctions between DMV/CHP, AAA, and private VIN verifiers lie in pricing and convenience: CHP offers their service for free, but appointments are necessary. They require a referral and usually handle complex cases, though they do not typically travel unless there are specific circumstances, like large commercial units. DMV provides their service free of charge but does not offer travel services. They can perform VIN verifications for salvage or junked vehicles. AAA requires a membership fee for their services, limiting access to members. They avoid complex cases like older vehicles or those with inadequate records and cannot verify salvage or junked vehicles. Private VIN verifiers charge a fee for their service but are often the most convenient and efficient option. They do not handle verifications for salvage or junked vehicles.
  • Does CHP do VIN Verification?
Indeed, one of the services provided by the CHP for the public includes VIN verifications. Nonetheless, a referral is required to have your vehicle seen by the CHP. CHP usually verify Salvage Vehicles or Motorcycles. They verify vehicles without titles or vehicles with engine changes.

VIN Verification

In California, vehicle identifying number (VIN) verifications are required for registering a few motor vehicles.  Automobiles, pickup trucks, and motorbikes should have their VINs confirmed at a VIN verification test center.

For California car verification, unique vehicles must have a VIN confirmed at an authorized DMV.

The formalities are as follows:

Transport your vehicle to a VIN verification testing facility. Look for a location close to yours.

After your VIN has been verified, you will receive a verification form that will be required to register your vehicle at the DMV.  In the event that your verification form is lost 30 days or more after the date of verification, you must have your VIN confirmed again and pay the VIN charge. You can obtain a copy of the form from the station that checked the VIN. You can register your vehicle at any DMV location with your verification form.

If you are unable to verify your VIN at the station, you will be given a paper that must be brought to a DMV California verification of the car.  Please bring your car and the papers to a DMV Inspection Lane (check out the locations and hours).

How Much Will It Cost?

VIN verifications performed by the DMV or CHP are completely free. Private VIN verifiers, on the other hand, will charge you for the inspection. They will also charge you for travel. This charge will vary depending on the distance, time, location, and personal preferences of the particular company that you contact.

What are the differences between the DMV, CHP, or private VIN verifiers?

The two primary distinctions between DMV/CHP, AAA, and private VIN verification are cost and convenience:

CHP's services are free of charge. However, you will need to schedule an appointment to be seen. Aside from that, they will not verify the VIN of any vehicle or trailer. Before making an appointment with the CHP, you should have a referral. Furthermore, they do not travel unless it is a specific situation, such as a large commercial unit or multiple units in a single site. They are ideally the ones who handle the more difficult situations since they have been properly trained.

The DMV does not charge for its services. However, they do not travel. On salvage or junked vehicles, they can perform a VIN verification.
Because AAA charges a membership fee, you must be a member in order to be seen by them. Furthermore, they avoid difficult ones, such as older cars, cars with no records, or anything involving dealerships. They are unable to do

VIN verification on salvage or junked autos.

Private VIN checkers may charge a fee for their services. However, they are the quickest and easiest alternative of all. They are unable to perform verifications on salvage or junked autos.
